Max: 25 participants in one class

This one-day class is designed to equip journalists and students with the skills to find stories through the use of spreadsheets. Participants will learn how to effectively organise, analyse, and interpret data to uncover newsworthy insights. The class will be hands-on, with practical exercises and real-world examples to ensure that attendees can apply these skills in their own work.

Class Objectives: By the end of the class, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basics of data journalism and the role of spreadsheets in it.
  • Import and organise data within a spreadsheet.
  • Perform data cleaning and preparation for analysis.
  • Use basic and advanced spreadsheet functions to analyse data.
  • Identify trends, patterns, and anomalies that can lead to compelling stories.
  • Visualise data within spreadsheets to support storytelling.

Class Schedule:

9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Introduction to Data Journalism and Spreadsheets

  • Overview of data journalism
  • Importance of spreadsheets in data journalism
  • Examples of stories found through data analysis

10:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Importing and Organising Data

  • Importing data from various sources (CSV, Excel, Google Sheets)
  • Organising data into meaningful structures
  • Data cleaning: handling missing values, duplicates, and errors

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Basic Data Analysis with Spreadsheets

  • Using basic functions (SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT)
  • Sorting and filtering data
  • Creating pivot tables

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Lunch Break (Provided)

1:00 PM – 2:30 PM: Advanced Data Analysis Techniques

  • Using advanced functions (VLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH)
  • Conditional formatting to highlight important data
  • Performing statistical analysis

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM: Finding Stories in Data
